Meet the R&D Team

For 2011, we assembled our R&D Team from a group of die-hards who have a little deeper understanding on what exactly makes GPG products unique. Most of these folks are simply friends which, by now, have had several seasons worth of experience using our gear. We consider these folks as our ongoing source of feedback – so our dialogue with them keeps the Research and Development flowing for GPG. A few of them may familiar faces from the TV Shows or companies that they represent, but they are all very dedicated to their success...and they rely on their gear. We want to build better products. These friends keep us moving in the right direction.

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

I don't have just one. The Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack is off the charts for Western game. The BowBat is my choice for Midwestern whitetails or any other hunting I'm doing out of a stand. And with us runnin' cameras whereever we go, I don't trust my equipment to anything except the Cameraman Pack. Even after a 20 foot fall out of a tree the camera was fine and working for that afternoons hunt.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Being from Kentucky, I am a fan of hunting the Midwest. Mostly it will be for big white tail on one of the family farms. Western hunting is a close second though.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

Everyday in the field with me always seems wild. One of my favorite moments happened on November 2010. I was in Kansas and my cameraman had gotten sick and couldn't go. There I am on the last afternoon in the last hour filming myself and tripped the trigger and sent an arrow through the boiler room on a 148" buck. Close runner up would have to be when I hammered my Bull elk at 38 yards. It's a rush when all there is, is air and opportunity between me and a giant bull!

What is your favorite species to hunt?

I gotta say I like it all. From a drop camp at 13,000 feet in Colorado, to the low lands of South Carolina chasing hogs. Put camo and a bow in my hands and we will find something to dull broadheads in.

The Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack. Enough said!

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Spot and Stalk. Colorado.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

I was turkey hunting in Texas and had a gobbler held up at 50 yards. I was being filmed for the Art of Deception's TV show and I whispered to the camera man that I could make the shot. He said, "Yeah right, I hear that all the time. Go ahead if you think you can." I drew back, aimed and let her fly. The arrow hit true right in the middle of the big Tom's breast and he dropped like a rock. The camera man only said one thing, "Well shut my mouth!"

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

My favorite piece would be the BowBat. The BowBat allows me to store my bow in my toolbox in the bed of my truck (no bulky hardcase). Once I hit my hunting destination, I grab my pack and off to my stand. Good quality and functional – what more do you need!

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Favorite hunting style would be from a treestand during the Illinois rut.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

My best day in the field happened during the 2010 Illinois bow season. This was the first year my 14-year-old daughter bow hunted. I got to witness her make a perfect shot on a mature doe at 21 yards. Nothing better…

What is your favorite species to hunt?

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

My favorite is the Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack. I have used it on several elk hunts. The ability to carry your quiver on your side, the range finder pocket, and the hydration tube make this pack very functional. I also carry the SNS in turkey season. The range finder pocket carries my slate call and the pack itself holds 2 decoys. It has replaced my turkey vest.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

I live in West Virginia and my favorite hunting style is treestand hunting whitetails.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

My best days have been watching my kids shoot their first deer and my wife's 1st black bear.

What is your favorite species to hunt?

Ask me in the spring and it's turkeys – in the fall it's whitetails.

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

I used the Leech Pack all last bow season and even when not using a climber, I slung it over my shoulder mail pouch style. Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack for hogs, turkeys and even muzzleloader season. Great all around pack.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Favorite hunting style would be running and gunning for turkeys. Second would be using a Lone Wolf climber in deer season. Favorite state would have to be Ohio with Pennsylvania a close second.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

Hard to pick one best day of hunting especially with all the days Dad and I have been in the woods together. If I had to pick one it would probably be the day I shot my first deer. After I stuck an arrow in what may have been the smallest 4-point in the state of West Virginia, I was so excited I couldn't get the safety harness off. Dad was telling me we needed to give it time, I was ready to jump out of the tree and take off running after it!

What is your favorite species to hunt?

Running down an armadillo with the bad boy, a spotlight, and a .22 (that may or may not have been sighted in) is my favorite species to hunt. Kidding of course, turkeys are by far my favorite animal to hunt. Second favorite is whatever is in season at the time.

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

The TTS has by far been my favorite piece of GamePlan Gear, taking the weight of my old Summit off my back! The shoulder straps are next to none and I love the pocket, which is where I store the bow rope. The Whitetail Underdogs can't get enough of the Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack or the BowBat! GPG makes awesomely functional, pocket effective gear that minimizes what you need to carry all your hunting gear into the field! We really love all GamePlan Gear Products!

What is your favorite hunting style?

Our favorite hunting style is anything that allows us to get aggressive during the season. Usually we are in a treestand or ground blind…but, if need be, we will spot and stalk! We hunt mostly in Pennsylvania.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

Obviously the best day in the field has to have a success in it. One of our crazy circumstances is when Phil videoed the first successful deer hunt for Whitetail Underdogs and Craig's best buck to date! Phil had seen this particular buck at least 6 times while hunting and just couldn't close the deal. After killing an 8pt the day before, Craig was invited to hunt while Phil filmed. As luck would have it, the buck showed up at 7:30 am, responding to calling. Craig made a great shot and Whitetail Underdogs was started!

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

That's a tough one, I like 'em all. I would say that would be between the Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack and the BowBat. I use the Spot-n-Stalk most of the time because my girlfriend stole my BowBat. LOL The Spot-n-Stalk is so easy to get access to and slip on and off of your shoulder. The BowBat makes it easy to carry all my equipment in one pack and I don't have to worry about 2 or 3 straps on my shoulder and one always sliding off.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

I love to bow hunt and prefer treestand hunting. That's the way I started and that's my favorite. Although I have tried all of the different tactics, I always go back to the treestand. I hunt in my home state of Kentucky in the Northern part of the state.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

On November 5th 2009, I harvested my best bow kill buck. I had to walk past a stand that I had hung earlier in the year on the way to another stand that I was planning on hunting that evening. I saw a rub on a cedar tree that was fresh and about 100 yards away. Something was telling me to get in that stand and not to go to the other one. I finally decided to get in the first stand and wait to see what would happen. I climbed up, hung my Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack on the hook, hung my bow up, nocked an arrow and sat down to cool off for a second. As soon as I hit the seat, I heard something and turned and looked to my right to see what it was. At 25 yards - he stood behind me. The wind had shifted that day and wasn't what the weatherman said it would be. He walked back towards the way I walked in and stopped at 30 yards when I made the shot. This all took place in about 5 minutes! Talk about being in the right place at the right time and everything coming together. 200 yards and an easy blood trail led to my first Pope and Young 8 pt. He grossed 146 2/8 and had 1 7/8 deductions and netted 144 3/8.

What is your favorite piece of GamePlan Gear used?

My favorite GamePlan Gear is the BowBat! I actually use this gear for Turkey Hunting, I hang a half blind off of it, then find a nice tree next to a field, throw my decoys out, and fold the bow bat in half, and have like a mini seat to sit in, with the pockets open on each side of me; so as I hang out and wait for the big Tom to come by, I have easy access to my gear. Also, the pouch for the call is the perfect size for my box call, it makes zero sound while I walk in.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

My favorite spot to hunt is from my treestand, with my BowBat and my Hunter Safety System…my stand is in an old oak tree, with acorns all over the place. This year we are headed to Montana to hunt Elk (if we draw tags); so hopefully, spot and stalk Elk will become my favorite!

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

Well, my craziest hunting experience was my first mule deer in Colorado. That morning, our friend, Jon shot an Elk, and the guys all hiked out to get it, and my job was to drive the truck down an old logging road to meet them. Well, I saw a few deer in the woods while I was driving down, and I radioed, what do I do….my husband Todd radioed back…"shoot it"…so, I knew I couldn't shoot it from the truck, and I also knew if I turned off his truck it would spatter and scare the deer away….so, I left his truck running (parking brake on), and stalked the deer for about 20 minutes before I shot it…I got back, and a game warden was there stuck behind Todd's truck, luckily, I was so excited I had just killed my first deer, that he could have cared less if I left the truck or not! Todd didn't care either, but did ask me to never do that again!

What is your favorite species to hunt?

My dream hunt is Red Stag, but I've never hunted them before. My heritage is Irish, and my Family crest has a huge red stag on it. My ancestors lived off Red Stag, and that is what I will hunt someday. I like to hunt turkeys, even though I've yet to harvest one with my bow…this year I hope! Two seasons ago, I called a big Tom within five feet from me, and was so excited, that I forgot I still had my box call in my hand, and when I set it down it scared that ole Tom away...FAST little suckers! Then last year, our season was riddled with tornado watches so not much hunting; so hopefully, this is my year for a Turkey! (oh, minus the ticks, which seem to hunt me)!

I absolutely love the Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack. I carry all the gear I need and still have a place to store my heavy jacket during the mid-day stalk. Quiver attachment and Rangefinder pocket are in the perfect location. I can get to them quickly and easily and they are tucked away nicely when I don't need them.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Spot and stalk is my favorite style of hunting. Rather it be for moose in the Yukon, elk in the Idaho or whitetail's in my homestate of WV, the challenge of getting in bow range on foot is awesome.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

I will never forget one of my most memorable times while hunting. It was in 2007, I was moose hunting in the Yukon when I spotted a 700 lb. grizzly – that's right a 700 POUND grizzly bear. After stalking him for 3 hours in the thick bush, I realized that he was now stalking me. Right then it was time to make fast tracks in the direction away from him – and that I did!

What is your favorite species to hunt?

My favorite species to hunt would have to be Elk. Elk hunting requires patience and the ability to make the right decision quickly while stalking. Knowing how to call in a Bull Elk within bow range without him and his cows smelling you is a real challenge.

I've got lots of favorite products from GamePlan Gear. The Bow Strap and Spot-n-Stalk Quiver Pack are awesome when you have to cover a lot of ground. And don't forget the 'SightSkin' Sight Cover. It's so easy to break a fiber optic or bend a pin when you're out in the middle of nowhere. Our cameramen are in love with the CameraMan Pack! It protects some pretty expensive gear and helps keep them organized so they can set up quickly when we get in the stand.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Being a southern boy I cut my teeth in the woods huntin' from a treestand. I still hunt from a tree a lot but have added spot and stalk as well as ground blind hunting to my arsenal. Whatever it takes to get a show. You got to have flexibility! My favorite places to hunt are North Dakota, Iowa, and Saskatchewan for whitetail with a bow.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

My favorite style of hunting is sitting in my comfortable Ol'Man Treestand in the middle of November with my Limbsaver bow. Although I'm from Texas, Kansas is my favorite state to hunt whitetails.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

One year, I was in NW Oklahoma and had a solid 150" plus 9 point come into 20 yards. I shot and was disgusted to see that I hit him high. I new it was not a fatal shot and I was down in the dumps! I looked for buck for a couple hours with no luck. I moved a few hundred yards for the next mornings hunt and amazingly, that same buck showed up. I center punched him at 25 yards…what an emotional roller coaster!

I simply love the BowBat. It makes everything from getting moving, to setting up, to packing up a breeze. I grab my BowBat with all my gear and bow all wrapped up in one handy unit. I don't miss having to dig in a back pack for something once I'm in the tree either. It's all right there at my fingertips. I never have to worry about my jacket snagging tree bark anymore either.

What is your favorite hunting style?

I hunt about 98% of the time from a treestand.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

Wow, that's a tough one. I have had a lot of great days in the field. I would say my top few are as follows. My very first deer being taken by bow. My first Pope and Young buck. My son's first deer, also with his bow. The first buck I rattled in...and many, many more that I don't have the time or space to mention.

What is your favorite species to hunt?

Without a doubt whitetail deer. I would love to try other species, but my chosen career as a teacher makes traveling to other states to hunt in fall impossible. Until they start an elk herd in Ohio, I'll stick with the whitetail. That's ok though because I love hunting them.

Day 7 of a Colorado archery mule deer hunt. No wind the whole trip and we find a 190+ muley bedded on a shelf, from the top and easy 30 yard shot. We get the sneak on and when we reach the top above the muley, he's gone! Look 100 yards away in the bottom and a doe walks out. He then walks out right behind her and breeds her in front of us. Pretty much sums up that trip!

That's a tough one…one that stands out is a whitetail hunt a few years ago. After several days of heavy rain I simply could not stay out of the woods, so I grabbed a tree stand umbrella and headed out in the rain. Within 2 hours the rain quit and within minutes a stud 10 point came out to freshen his scrape 35 yards from me quartering away. I made the shot and watched him fall, shortly after the sun came out for the first time in days. Best part was my wife was in camp and simply said you will kill one tonight. She even offered to help get him out of the woods.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

My hunting style changes with the animal that I am chasing. If I have my choice, I will hunt my home state of Kentucky for mature whitetails; and I will be in the tree. Many times when I am hunting I have a cameraman so there are advantages to being 20 feet up. But if I'm chasing thunder chickens in the hills n' hollers, I like to practice the run-n-gun method. You tell me the weather conditions and the game species to hunt, and I will tell you the style (after I kill it)!

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

The craziest animal holds the right for the craziest hunt, and that is Antelope. Some call em' speed goats, others call em' herders, but I call em' freaks! This animal is the most unique game species I have ever hunted in North America. And simply because they are unpredictable. We chased these boogers' in South Dakota and finally connected with one just shy of P&Y on the third day. Our setup was backwards, the cameraman was free handed but I managed to squeeze a shot off at 56 yards and we took home the head gear. Enough said.

What is your favorite species to hunt?

Whitetail Deer. And did I mention I like to hunt Whitetail Deer? Mature bucks offer up the most challenge of any other game species I hunt. Sure they can be patterned. But I don't care how good you are, if you don't have a little bit of luck on your side the chances of you killing a 140"+ with a bow are slim to none. Hard work, long hours and practice are the three factors to consider if you want to bag a mature whitetail every fall.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Now I live in Pike County, Illinois, because I have followed my dream to the land of milk and honey. I generally hunt on private land: farms that are owned by a friend or family, so we get to know the land very well. Treestands are responsible for most of my success in the field. We hang them early and if there isn't a tree, we'll put a banks blind right in the middle of the food plot.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

My best hunt ever was an all day sit in Van Buren County, Iowa. It didn't end with a kill shot. In fact, I wasn't even the one hunting...I was behind the camera. We saw 4 shooters and the biggest deer I'd ever seen alive – a 180 inch 3.5 year old with a lot of non-typical points. I got it all on camera. My buddy went back in the next day with another cameraman and killed the biggest buck of his life. Lee Lakosky bought the farm the next year; it was that good!

My personal favorite GamePlan product is the Spot-n-Stalk. The pack has it all and makes for an easy day of hunting. Whether you are in the treestand, blind or leaning against a tree this is the pack for me. With the easy to access compartment and quiet construction it makes for the ultimate hunting buddy. It is also a nice accessory on the target range (bow or gun).

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

The Buckeye State is my home state and as many know, it is full of big deer and big gobblers. I enjoy sitting in a treestand with my son waiting on the buck of a lifetime to make a big mistake. I also enjoy setting up the blind to get close and personal with the gobblers. It also helps with my 11 and 9 year old boys. Come on, we have all been there! The sun hits your face, no action and it is night-night time. When the gobbler wakes them up like an alarm clock…Thank God for the blind.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

Many might be quick to tell about their best day in the field and what they accomplished on that day. My best day in the field turned out to be a day that I didn't harvest a thing. It was the day that my 9 yr old son smoked his 1st 7-point buck from 27 yards away with his crossbow. You would have thought that I shot the trophy elk of a lifetime. 4 degrees on a December morning and he stuck it out like a man. Which reminds me of another benefit of the Spot-n-Stalk, you can load it up with hand warmers, Nintendo DSI and snacks. I am sure there will be more interesting stories to come.

For Eastern United States bow hunting, I like to use the BowBat because it keeps my bow protected from brush to and from the stand. With the BowBat I keep all my treestand gear organized and at arms reach in the stand. If I'm hunting in the West, the Spot-n-Stalk is my favorite because of it's ability to have your arrows off your bow to cut on weight but still in reach which is a great factor.

What is your favorite hunting style & home state hunted?

Spot and stalk is by far my favorite way to hunt. Being that my home state is Ohio I do a lot of treestand hunting.

What was your best day in the field, crazy circumstance, etc.

I was in the Gila with my brother hunting Elk in 2008. We spotted a big bull elk at 10:30 a.m. and worked all day stalking on him. He would move cows all over the open country, so we had to keep changing to get our wind right. After six hours I was able to get within seventy yards of him. The wind kept changing, he stood up and walked thirteen yards and I made an 83 yard shot on him. It was the end to a great, but hard hunt with my brother. So that would be my best day in the field being with family, and making a shot I practiced for all year.

What is your favorite species to hunt?

I would have to say Elk are my favorite to hunt because of being out in the open country. Listening to them bugle, then calling to a rutting bull is so exciting when they stop and start your way bugling. There is so much excitement in hunting elk.
